Gulfstream's

The c/n plate on any Gulfstream jet is usually found mounted on the bulkhead inside the aircraft. There is an external c/n plate mounted on the nose-wheel door but this is often unrelaible.

G.1159 GULFSTREAM 2

The earliest Gulfstream jet model was the GS 2 (G.1159) which drew a lot from the successful earlier Gulfstream One turbo-prop. This was followed by the GS 2TT with wingtip fuel tanks - not a huge success. GS 2's can be easily identified in any guise by the extra window in the cockpit compared to the GS 3 (see both photos). Many GS.2's have been retrofitted with the GS.3 wing (the G.1159B) or winglets (GS.2SP and GS.2W). The military version of the GS 2/3/4 is designated the C-20.

G.1159 GULFSTREAM 2TT

This modification to the original GS.2 design was not a huge success. The wingtip tanks increased fuel capacity and range but the drag they created also increased fuel burn !!!

G.1159B GULFSTREAM 2B and GS.2SP / GS.2W

The Gulfstream 2B (basically a GS 3 wing retrofitted to a GS 2) and GS 2SP and 2W (GS 2 wing with winglet modifications only) can both be easily confused with the GS 3 - look out for that extra cockpit window in all the 2 models. HP-1A shown is a GS 2SP

G.1159A GULFSTREAM 3

A Gulfstream 2 with a much sleeker more pointed nose cone and a different cockpit window design featuring 4 panes in total compared to 6 in the GS 2 (see photos).

G.1159C GULFSTREAM 4 / 4SP

A Gulfstream 3 with quieter RR Tay engines replacing the noisy Spey engines of the 2+3. The GS 4's engines are much bigger and have silver thrust reverser buckets making it easily recognised from the GS 3 and 5.

G.1159D GULFSTREAM 5

The Gulfstream 5 has a bigger wing and extended fuselage. It can be identified by the large gap between cockpit windows and the main entrance door, the slight bulge at the front of the tail fin and the lack of thrust reverser fins on the engines giving the engine a very clean look. The miltary version of the GS 5 is designated the C-37.
